Explore container volumes at 12 major U.S. ports to understand shifting trade patterns, economic indicators, and supply chain dynamics across different coasts and months.
In 2024, U.S. ports experienced notable shifts in cargo volumes, reflecting broader economic trends and supply chain dynamics. Here’s an overview of the top U.S. ports by container volume and emerging patterns in maritime cargo.
Top U.S. Container Ports in 2024
- Port of Los Angeles, California: Maintaining its position as the busiest container port in the U.S., the Port of Los Angeles handled approximately 9.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2024. This port serves as a critical hub for trade between the United States and Asia, facilitating the movement of goods across the Pacific Ocean. Its strategic location on the West Coast allows it to efficiently manage high volumes of cargo, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy.
- Port of Long Beach, California: Adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach processed around 9.4 million TEUs in 2024. Together, these neighboring ports form one of the world’s largest port complexes, playing a pivotal role in international trade.
- Port of New York and New Jersey: As the leading port on the East Coast, this port complex handled approximately 8.9 million TEUs in 2024, underscoring its significance in transatlantic trade and its extensive hinterland connections.
- Port of Savannah, Georgia: The Port of Savannah experienced substantial growth, with a 12% increase in TEU volume compared to the previous year, reaching nearly 5.6 million TEUs in 2024. This growth solidifies its position as a major gateway for containerized cargo in the Southeastern United States.
- Port of Houston, Texas: Handling over 4.1 million TEUs in 2024, the Port of Houston celebrated a landmark year, achieving a record-breaking 53,066,219 million tons of cargo. In addition to its two highly efficient container facilities, Port Houston runs one of the largest breakbulk terminals in the U.S.
Maritime Cargo Trends in 2024
The year 2024 marked a period of recovery and growth for U.S. ports, influenced by various factors:
- Post-Pandemic Rebound: Follow
- Retail Inventory Restocking: U.S. retailers increased imports to replenish inventories, leading to elevated port volumes. This trend was particularly evident in the first half of 2024, with major ports reporting double-digit gains compared to the previous year.
- Supply Chain Diversification: In response to previous supply chain disruptions, companies diversified their shipping routes, resulting in a more balanced distribution of cargo across both West and East Coast ports.
- Infrastructure Investments: Significant investments in port infrastructure and technology enhancements improved operational efficiencies, enabling ports to handle increased cargo volumes more effectively.
Conclusion
The performance of U.S. ports in 2024 reflects a resilient and adaptive maritime industry, responding to evolving global trade dynamics and supply chain strategies. As ports continue to invest in infrastructure and technology, they are better positioned to accommodate future growth and mitigate potential disruptions.

Port of Los Angeles cargo volumes soar 28% YoY in September
The Port of Los Angeles processed 954,706 total TEUs in September as the port continued to see an increase in retailers moving goods ahead of the usual peak season.
The port expects a sustained rise in volumes in the coming months. While this time period is traditionally slack season, there is no evidence there will be a precipitous drop in cargo volume, Executive Director Gene Seroka said in a media briefing on Oct.18.
With an early Lunar New Year coming up in 2025 and the U.S. presidential election potentially leading to a more aggressive tariff policy, “we may see an uptick in cargo brought in early to avoid those extra costs,” Seroka said.
