OLEDWorks, JDI to build US display manufacturing plant

The companies plan to build a fabrication plant and research and development center to meet demand for U.S. defense, automotive and medical industries.

OLEDWorks and Japan Display Inc. Partner to Build U.S. Display Manufacturing Facility

OLEDWorks, a leading innovator in multi-stack organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, has announced a partnership with Japan Display Inc. (JDI) to establish an advanced display fabrication plant in the United States. This strategic collaboration will bring cutting-edge OLED manufacturing to the U.S., leveraging JDI’s eLEAP OLED production process and OLEDWorks’ multi-stack architecture to create high-performance, energy-efficient displays.

Expanding U.S. Advanced Display Manufacturing

The new facility will focus on producing high-performance OLED displays for key industries, including defense, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and industrial applications. These sectors require secure, durable, and energy-efficient display technologies, making domestic production a critical advantage. By manufacturing these advanced displays within the U.S., OLEDWorks and JDI aim to enhance supply chain security and reduce dependence on overseas production, particularly from Asia-based manufacturers.

Additionally, the investment in U.S.-based display production aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen domestic technology infrastructure and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities, particularly in high-tech manufacturing.

JDI’s Strategic Investment in OLEDWorks

As part of this collaboration, Japan Display Inc. has acquired a 6.69% stake in OLEDWorks, signaling a long-term commitment to the partnership. The integration of JDI’s eLEAP (environment positive lithography with maskless deposition) OLED process with OLEDWorks’ multi-stack architecture is expected to yield higher efficiency, improved brightness, and longer-lasting OLED displays compared to conventional OLED technologies.

By combining these advancements, the two companies aim to set new industry standards for high-performance OLED manufacturing while promoting sustainable production practices.

Creating a U.S. Research and Development Hub

Beyond the fabrication plant, OLEDWorks and JDI are also planning to establish a U.S.-based research and development center dedicated to advancing OLED technology. This initiative will foster collaboration with customers, suppliers, and technology partners, ensuring that the U.S. remains at the forefront of next-generation display innovation.

The new R&D hub will also play a role in developing new OLED applications and refining manufacturing processesto further increase efficiency and reduce production costs. This focus on research will strengthen the domestic display industry, attract new talent, and create high-tech jobs in engineering, materials science, and manufacturing.

Commitment to Domestic Manufacturing and Innovation

The partnership between OLEDWorks and JDI represents a significant investment in the future of U.S. display manufacturing, marking the first facility of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. By establishing a domestic production ecosystem, the companies aim to:

  • Reduce reliance on overseas suppliers for critical OLED display components.
  • Support national security and defense applications with U.S.-made technology.
  • Strengthen the supply chain for key industries that require high-performance displays.
  • Create new job opportunities in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and R&D.

This initiative is poised to transform the U.S. into a leader in OLED technology, reinforcing the country’s competitiveness in high-tech manufacturing while driving economic growth and technological innovation.

As demand for next-generation OLED displays continues to rise, OLEDWorks and JDI’s investment will help position the United States as a global hub for advanced display technology, supporting both commercial and mission-critical applications.
